Prostate Ultrasound

Ultrasound is the use of high-frequency sound waves to image organs and other structures inside the body. A transrectal transducer is used for this type of exam. The transducer is shaped to fit the rectum. A transrectal ultrasound is the most common test to look at the male pelvic organs such as the prostate and seminal vesicles. The transducer sends out sound waves and “listens” as the sound waves bounce off objects and return to the transducer. Sound waves are then converted into an image that is seen on the ultrasound machine. This image can be frozen and stored for diagnostic use. At Sparrow Hospital, all transducers are high-resolution to ensure the most detailed and diagnostic image. One of the greatest benefits of Ultrasound imaging is that there are no known health risks.

A Prostate ultrasound is performed to assess the prostate gland. There are many reasons to perform to perform a prostate ultrasound. Some of the common reasons include:

  • To identify inflammation or enlargement of the prostate gland.
  • To assess any lumps or nodules detect on a prostate cancer-screening exam.
  • To locate any abnormal growth in the prostate.
  • To determine the cause of infertility.
  • An elevated PSA test result.

To prepare for the Prostate Ultrasound, please wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothes. An enema will need to be taken a few hours before the exam to ensure that the rectum is clean for the exam. Please check with your physician regarding the preparation for your prostate ultrasound. You will be asked to change into a gown for your exam.

During the ultrasound exam, a small transrectal transducer is used. Please let the technologist know if you have a known latex allergy because the probe is generally covered with a latex sheath. The transducer will be inserted into the opening of the rectum for the exam and should feel similar to a prostate screening exam performed by your doctor. This procedure can provide valuable information to both you and your health care provider regarding your prostate health. When the technologist has completed all the necessary scans and images the exam is complete.

Once the exam is complete, you will be free to leave. You can return to your regular schedule with no interruptions. A report will be generated in 48 hours and sent to your physician. If you need to take copies of the ultrasound exam to your doctor, films can be obtained at our centralized Film Library.
