Aerosol Nebulizer Patient Instructions

What is an aerosol nebulizer treatment?
Your doctor has ordered these treatments to deliver liquid medication in a fine mist into your lungs.

How will this treatment help?
This treatment will help open your airway to let you breathe easier. It will decrease wheezing and help you to cough up mucus plugging your lungs and airways.

What do I need to do?
We encourage you to read the fact sheet that comes with your medication and learn about any drug interactions or problems you might have. Some medications may cause: nervousness, shakiness, pounding in chest or nausea. Not all medications will have these side effects and not all people react in the same way(if at all). IF YOU DO - STOP AND REST, wait for the feeling to subside, then finish your treatment. If these feelings persist, contact your physician.

To ensure safe aerosol treatments, follow these instructions.

  1. To give a treatment:
    1. Measure the medication dose shown on your prescription label as instructed by your physician, and place into the nebulizer cup.
    2. Sit upright in a chair or in a slight recline.
    3. Place the mouthpiece between your lips, close your mouth and breathe in slowly through your mouth. Take breaths deeper than normal. (If using a mask, it is still recommended that you breathe through your mouth.)
    4. The nebulizer cup must remain in an upright position to work effectively.
    5. Try to hold your breath for a few seconds before you breathe out.
    6. Breathe out slowly in a relaxed way.
    7. You can pause after a few minutes to rest or to try to cough. Coughing will help to move any mucus that might block your airways. You should turn the nebulizer off when resting so your medication is not wasted.
    8. Continue the treatment until all of the liquid medication is used. This usually occurs after approximately 10-15 minutes. This is evident by the disappearance of the medicine within the cup and is easily noted by a change from a "hissing" noise to a "sputtering" noise with the mist coming out intermittently instead of continuously.

  1. To clean your nebulizer:
    1. After each treatment - take the nebulizer apart, rinse each piece in water, shake off any extra water and place on a clean paper towel to air dry.
    2. Once each day - take the nebulizer apart, wash in dish soap, rinse and then soak in a white vinegar and water solution ( 1 part vinegar to 4 parts water) for 30 minutes After 30 minutes, rinse off the vinegar/water mixture with water, shake off any extra water and place on a clean paper towel to air dry.
NEVER PUT THE NEBULIZER IN A CLOSED CONTAINER UNLESS ALL PARTS ARE THOROUGHLY DRY.
    3. If the nebulizer no longer makes a good mist or "sputters" even when full, it is not working properly and needs to be replaced. Please remember to always keep at least one working nebulizer available and to call for supply needs before you run out.

  1. Refer to your prescription container for proper medication storage or ask your pharmacist.

  1. Filter replacement and/or cleaning may vary depending upon the brand of equipment used. For more information, refer to the manufacturer's manual or training instructions provided at time of delivery.
