Pneumocystis Carinii Cytology
Test includes: Screening of GMS (silver) stain plus routine cytology.
Requirements
- Container: Clean container large enough to allow addition of fixative
- Specimen: submit fresh (unfixed) 20-30ml of washing or lavage. Bronchial alveolar lavage, bronchial wash/brush, tracheal aspirate,
sputum (least valuable). Send specimen immediately to SRL Cytology department. If the specimen cannot be transported immediately the specimen must be:
- Refrigerated; or preserved in 30ml of Cytolyt solution. Note: Do not use this method to preserve the
specimen when other tests must be performed from the container
- Storage: refrigerate
- Performed: Monday Friday
- Reported: 2 business days
- Reference range: Narrative report
