Sputum Cytology
Requirements
- Container: clean sterile container large enough to allow addition of fixative
- Specimen: submit fresh (unfixed) Sputum; transport immediately to SRL Cytology department. If the specimen cannot be transported immediately; the specimen must be:
- Refrigerated; or preserved in 30ml Cytolyt solution. Do not use this method to preserve the specimen when other tests must be performed from the container
- Storage: refrigerate
- Performed: Monday – Friday
- Reported: 2 business days
- Reference range: Narrative report
- Methodology: Microscopy
