Tzanck Smear Cytology (including Thin Prep Method)
Requirements:
- Container: Slide folder/carrier for direct smears. PreservCyt solution vial for liquid based Thin Prep
- Specimen: Direct Smear; submit 1 – 3 slides prepared by opening a fresh blister, and when possible make two
smears from the evacuated fluid by spreading thinly across the glass slides. After collecting the fluid sample, carefully use a blade or
spatula (do not use swabs) to scrape the base of the blister; then smear the collected material thinly across the glass slide. The smears are to be
fixed immediately with Cytology spray fixative. If you have any questions on how to properly collect the specimen, please call the

- Specimen: Alternate Thin Prep method: submit specimen in PreservCyt solution. To separate the specimen from the collection device, vigorously rinse the brush/scraper by swirling in the
preservative and brushing against the wall of the collection vial. When this action is complete discard the brush/scraper, tightly cap the vial, label the vial with the patients name, and
source of specimen. Transport specimen to the SRL Cytology department
