Tzanck Smear Cytology (including Thin Prep Method)

Requirements:

• Container: Slide folder/carrier for direct smears. PreservCyt solution vial for liquid based Thin Prep
• Specimen: Direct Smear; submit 1 – 3 slides prepared by opening a fresh blister, and when possible make two smears from the evacuated fluid by spreading thinly across the glass slides. After collecting the fluid sample, carefully use a blade or spatula (do not use swabs) to scrape the base of the blister; then smear the collected material thinly across the glass slide. The smears are to be fixed immediately with Cytology spray fixative. • Specimen: Alternate Thin Prep method: submit specimen in PreservCyt solution. To separate the specimen from the collection device, vigorously rinse the brush/scraper by swirling in the preservative and brushing against the wall of the collection vial. When this action is complete discard the brush/scraper, tightly cap the vial, label the vial with the patients name, and source of specimen. Transport specimen to the SRL Cytology department
