Urine Cytology

Requirements

• Container: clean sterile container large enough to allow addition of fixative
• Specimen: submit 20–50ml (min. 10ml) of fresh (unfixed) urine and transport immediately to SRL Cytology department. If the specimen cannot be transported immediately the specimen must be:
• Refrigerated or preserved in 30ml of Cytolyt solution. Note: Do not use this method to preserve the specimen when other tests must be performed from the container
• Storage: refrigerate
• Performed: Monday – Friday
• Reported: 2 business days
• Reference range: Narrative report
• Methodology: Microscopy
