Musculoskeletal Disorders

Musculoskeletal Disorders or diseases are those that affect the bones, muscles and joints. They are characterized by chronic pain and limited mobility. Depending on the type and severity of the disorder or disease, treatment can range from simple rest to surgical intervention. Sparrow offers several specialized physical and occupational therapy options that can help increase mobility and relieve pain.

Some common musculoskeletal disorders include:

  • Arthritis - Inflammation of a joint, usually accompanied by pain, stiffness and swelling.
  • Back Pain - Any pain in the back. It is usually characterized by dull, continuous pain and tenderness in the muscles of the lower regions of the back. Some causes for back pain include poor posture, bad lifting, pushing and pulling techniques, and pregnancy.
  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome - Pain, numbness or weakness that affects some part of the median nerve in the hand, thumb or ring finger. Pain may radiate into the arm. Causes for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome include repetitive handwork and trauma.
  • Degenerative Joint Disease - Breakdown of a joint's smooth and lubricated surface. Common causes of this disease are aging, inflammation, previous injury, and congenital defects.
  • Epicondylitis - Inflammation of the epicondyle in the humerus (arm) and surrounding tissues. An example of this condition is Tennis Elbow. Common causes include repetitive motion, trauma, and overexertion.
  • Fibromyalgia - Chronic pain in muscles and soft tissues surrounding joints. Causes for this disorder are unknown.
  • Neck Pain - Neck pain is usually caused by bad habits including poor posture, poor lifting techniques, and overexertion on the job. Another major cause is stress. Some common symptoms of neck pain are persistent aching and stiffness, and sharp pain.
  • Repetitive Motion Disorders - Tissue damage caused by repeated trauma, usually associated with writing, painting, typing, or use of vibrating tools or other hand tools. Almost any form of activity that produces repeated trauma to a particular area of soft tissue, including tendons may cause this type of injury.
  • Scoliosis - Curvature of the spine generally caused by a congenital abnormality or trauma.
  • Tendonitis - Deterioration of a tendon from repetitive motion.
  • Trigger Finger - Trigger Finger is caused by an inflamed tendon that is aggravated by bending or staightening the finger. A popping or locking sensation characterizes this disorder.

Neurological Disorders

  • Brain Injury - Brain injury is an injury that occurs to the brain. There are many causes for brain injury including trauma, congenital defects, and brain attacks (strokes).
  • Guillain-Barre' Syndrome - Guillain-Barre' Syndrome is an acute autoimmune condition that causes nerve inflammation that damages the protective covering of the nerve causing loss of motor function and/or sensation.
  • Parkinson's Disease - Parkinson's Disease is a movement disorder that results from degenerative changes in the brain where body movement is controlled. Some symptoms are decreased facial expressions, unsteady gait, swallowing problems and slow voluntary movements.
  • Sciatica - Sciatica is characterized by pain radiating into the buttocks and descending down the back of the leg and results from compression of the sciatic nerve. Common causes of Sciatica are poor posture, muscle strain, overexertion, a slipped disk or wearing high heels.
  • Spinal Cord Injury - Spinal cord injuries are injuries to the spine.
  • Spinal Stenosis - Spinal Stenosis is the narrowing of the spinal canal. Common causes of Spinal Stenosis are aging, trauma and degenerating of disks in the spine.
  • Stroke - Stroke is a brain attack. Some risk factors of stroke are high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking and drinking.
  • Stroke is a medical emergency - know the warning signs:

    • Sudden numbness or weakness of face, arm or leg especially on one side of the body (most common sign)
    • Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding
    • Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes
    • Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination
    • Sudden severe headache with no know cause
  • Vestibular Disorder - Vestibular disorders are balance disorders. Some symptoms include dizziness, lightheadedness, loss of balance, lack of coordination, and problems with walking.

Orthopedic Disorders

Orthopedic injuries are injuries that involve trauma to a bone, such as a fracture, or trauma to soft tissue. People with these types of injuries often have limited mobility because of pain, weakness, and limited range of motion. Sparrow focuses on helping patients regain their strength and mobility so they can get back to living life.

Common types of Orthopedic Disorders:

  • Degenerative Joint Disease - Degenerative Joint Disease is the breakdown of a joint's smooth and lubricated surface. Common causes of this disease are aging, inflammation, previous injury and congenital defects.
  • Fractures - A fracture is a broken bone. Common causes of fractures are injury, disease and age. As people age bone density decreases making the risk for fracture greater.
  • Hip Disorders - There are many types of hip disorders including Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Bone tumors, and Fractures. These hip disorders limit mobility and cause weakness.
  • Knee Disorders - There are many types of knee disorders including Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Ligament tears, Meniscus tears, and fractures. Treatment is designed to decrease pain, increase strength, mobility and function.

Women's Health

Physical Therapy can be an effective treatment for prenatal/post partum pain/dysfunction, post gynecological surgery, incontinence/pelvic floor weakness, and pelvic pain. Physical Therapy for these conditions often consists of strengthening exercises and muscle stimulation. By restoring muscle balance, patients can benefit from decreased pain and increased quality of life.
