Rehabilitation nurses specialize in the direct personal care of the physically impaired patient. The nurse evaluates a patient's physical, social, and behavioral status and assists the Rehabilitation Team in developing short and long-term goals. Patients and families will notice that many nursing associates do not wear uniforms. This is in keeping with the rehabilitation philosophy of emphasizing/promoting wellness and de-emphasizing the feeling of being "sick and in the hospital". Nurses also assess and address the following patient needs:

• hygiene
• bowel and/or bladder function
• skin integrity
• environmental factors such as infection control and safety
• coordinating therapies, tests, and procedures
• medication management in collaboration with the physician
• sleep and rest
