An occupational therapist evaluates the skills needed to maximize your independence in activities of daily living such as self-care (bathing, dressing, eating), homemaking, and vocationally-related tasks. The primary goal is to help you re-learn previous skills and/or adaptive skills to return to optimal independence. In addition to a self-care program, the occupational therapist develops a daily exercise program to increase arm/hand strength, range of motion, and coordination. Thinking skills and perceptual skills may also be addressed. Assistive devices are provided as appropriate to increase independence. A sling or splint may be fabricated for proper positioning, reduction of pain, or the prevention of deformity. Occupational therapy services are provided both individually and in group activities.
