The speech pathologist evaluates your communication skills to determine your strengths and weaknesses.
An individualized treatment program will be designed to improve speech language and cognitive abilities.
Cognitive areas can include attention, memory, reasoning skills, and problem solving. When appropriate,
alternate communication systems will be provided such as electronic speech aids or word boards.
The goal of speech treatment is to achieve an effective independent method of communication. Families are
encouraged to observe and participate in therapy sessions to gain a better understanding of specific
communication difficulties and how to best help you.
Patients experiencing difficulties with chewing or swallowing will be evaluated by the speech pathologist.
Diet and liquid levels that are necessary for safe eating will be determined. In addition, you may be
instructed in various techniques to provide for safe swallowing.
