Ventilator Weaning Success Stories

One of our complex patients with Guillian Barre Syndrome as his primary diagnosis, was weaned from the ventilator in less than 3 months. He was discharged to an in-patient rehab unit, and then went home with his wife. At that time he expressed a desire to volunteer here at Sparrow Specialty Hospital.

Another of our ventilator-dependent patients wanted to dance more than anything. She mentioned the song by Bobby Darrin, "Beyond the Sea". One of our respiratory therapist arranged to have the song played in her room and danced with the patient while she was still on the ventilator. She eventually weaned from the ventilator and was discharged home.

Another patient came to us from ICU with multiple complex medical issues. After being on the ventilator for 8 days, he was placed on Vapotherm. He was liberated in less than a month, was home visiting with his grandchildren and attending Sparrow Pulmonary Rehabilitaton two days a week. The patient was able to reach an important personal milestone when he renewed his driver's license!
