Volunteer and Improve the Quality of Your Life
Two years ago I began a journey that would change me in so many ways. I had been wanting to find a place where I might
volunteer my time. My darling Richard had passed away in August 2005, and I was retired from my life's work due to a stroke and cancer.

I started volunteering at Sparrow Specialty Hospital as a "caring companion" in March 2006, and entered a community
of caring staff who welcomed me with open arms, as well as fabulous people who were the patients I would get to know,
who I would laugh with, cry with, pray with, play with, etc.
The patients are dealing with serious and multiple issues, and yet have a strength of character and fortitude that
amazes me every day. Some days they just need someone to talk to and other days I do most of the talking, because
they want the company but are too weak to reciprocate. Some days they are just plain not up to visiting at all, so
I sit quietly and hold their hand until they go to sleep.
While I get many kudos from the staff and the patients for what I do, I can assure you I get much more out of this
than I give. That is the joy of volunteering. This is truly the most satisfying thing I have ever done in my life,
and I want to encourage anyone who has a little time to give, to look into volunteering. It will change the way you
look at the world, and it will improve the quality of your own life while you are giving a little of yourself to
someone else.
