Sparrow Specialty Hospital

Sparrow Specialty Hospital provides long-term acute care services. Patients come to Sparrow Specialty Hospital to get the time they need to heal from traumatic injuries and other serious conditions. The hospital is designed for medically complex and critically ill patients who require a longer hospitalization.

Sparrow Specialty began in 2004 on Sparrow's St. Lawrence campus in Lansing as a new type of hospital specifically created to offer care for long-term acute care patients. The goal was to provide patients a special place giving them the opportunity of time for healing.

Long-term acute care hospitals are designed for patients who need intense, extended care following treatment at a traditional acute care facility, outpatient care setting or home setting. These patients usually have medically complex or multiple medical conditions.

Sparrow Specialty Hospital is a 36-bed acute care hospital that specializes in patients who require a 25-day or longer length of stay in a hospital setting. We are fully accredited by the Healthcare Facilities Accreditation Program, an independent organization that accredits and certifies health care organizations and programs. Accreditation is recognized as a symbol of quality and reflects our hospital's commitment to meeting certain performance standards.

What makes Sparrow Specialty Hospital unique is that it's not a nursing home or rehabilitation facility. It is designed for patients who need intense, extended care services.

Our multidisciplinary team approach benefits patients with multiple and serious medical conditions. Staff members from a broad spectrum of services get involved in the patient’s treatment.

Our philosophy of jointly providing acute medical care and therapy services over extended periods is better for the patient, providing improved patient outcomes and reduced medical costs overall.

Sparrow Specialty Hospital is built on ICARE Values:

  • Innovation: Finding new ways to improve the quality of health services.
  • Compassion: Providing radical loving care for everyone.
  • Accountability: Accepting responsibility for our actions.
  • Respect: Valuing diversity, inclusion and working well together.
  • Excellence: Achieving the best results in all we do.
