Post Anesthesia Care Unit

Post Anesthesia Care Unit

The Recovery Room is a 16-bed unit that cares for patients (adults and children) immediately following a surgery that requires anesthesia. A registered nurse works with the anesthesiologist and surgeon to care for these patients. Patients are attached to equipment to monitor blood pressure, heart rate, and oxygen levels. Pain is also monitored. Medications for nausea and pain will be provided to a patient if needed. Generally, most patients will leave the Recovery Room in 1 to 3 hours. Visiting can be arranged for those patients requiring a longer than 3 hour stay in the Recovery Room.

Waiting Room for Families

There is a Surgical Waiting Lounge located nearby. Families may wait in this area to receive information regarding a patient during and after surgery. The volunteer department staffs the waiting area and is available to assist families.

Visiting in the Recovery Room

If a patient is in the Recovery Room for longer than 3 hours, the Recovery Room nurse will arrange for the family to visit. Visiting in the Recovery Room is based on the needs of the patient and the physical limitations of the unit. The visit will be brief, 5 minutes only, and will be limited to only 2 adult visitors.
