Save-A-Day Surgery

Quick Links

Questions? Please call Sparrow’s Pre-Operative Testing Center at 517.364.5540.

Sparrow’s Save-A-Day Surgery Program allows normally healthy patients to stay at home with their families the night before surgery.

Scheduling your pre-operative interview:

  • Call 517.364.6777 seven to 30 days before your surgery date to schedule a pre-operative interview.
  • The best time to call and schedule the interview is between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m., Monday through Friday.
  • Pre-operative interviews are scheduled four to five working days before the day of surgery.

Have the following ready when you call:

  • Social Security Number
  • Insurance card
  • A list of medications you are currently taking.
  • A list of your past surgeries and the year they were performed.

If you have had an electrocardiogram (EKG) within the past six months, please obtain a copy to bring with you on the day of surgery.

The Save-A-Day Surgery Program provides you with an opportunity to participate in your own health care. You will receive instructions based on the anesthesia guidelines that you must follow regarding food, liquid, and medication intake. The instructions given to you are very important for the success of your surgery. You must follow them or your surgery may be canceled.

  • If you are on medication for diabetes, do not take your morning dose, since you will not be eating.
  • Shower or bathe before coming to the hospital on the day of surgery.
  • You may brush your teeth, however, do not swallow any water.
  • All valuables should be left at home.
  • Contact lenses of any kind may not be worn in surgery. Please bring your lens case and solution to the hospital.
  • Remove all jewelry and body piercings before coming to the hospital.

Reporting for Surgery:

On the day of your surgery, arrive at least two hours prior to your surgery time or as instructed by the nurse.

  • Report to the information desk in the hospital and you will be given directions to the pre-surgical area.
  • You will begin your pre-operative admission in the outpatient care unit. A room will be assigned to you after surgery. Please leave your overnight case in the car until that time.
  • One visitor may be with the patient before surgery. A small waiting room is available for visitors. Children twelve years and under are not allowed to visit in the Outpatient Care Unit.
