College Student Volunteer Program - Hospital Unit Placement

Time Commitment: 4 hours per week.

Cancer Center Medical Oncology: Assist staff to coordinate the care of patients. Provide support to Patient Care Technician.

Cancer Center Radiation Therapy: Assistance to the patients and technical staff is primary responsibility. Provide general assistance to staff. Keep rooms clean and neat; run errands throughout the hospital.

Emergency Department: Providing assistance to the patient and family is the main responsibility. Provide general assistance to emergency room staff; help keep treatment rooms neat and clean; run errands throughout the hospital.

Escorts: Assist with patient transport throughout the hospital.

Food and Nutrition Services: Gather patient information for nutritional screening. Make patient rounds to assess patient appetite and food preferences. Maintain records and complete clerical activities, such as Q.I. reports, recipe analysis and special projects. Junior or senior dietetics majors only.

Hello Hospital is a program designed for elementary age school children. The program utilizes a hands-on approach to provide experiences at a hospital and the different career opportunities within the health care field. Volunteers provide a warm and fun learning environment for the students. Welcome teachers and student groups. Provide support and information at “hands-on” stations and explain each station to students. Present slide show. Answer general questions about the program, services of Sparrow and general information about careers in health care.

Hospice House: Direct patient contact in assisting terminally ill patients and their families. May provide respite care or companionship, "hands on" patient care and help with feeding. May also assist with clerical support, copying, filing, mailings, assembling charts, and surveying patients and families. Special projects may be assigned, based on department needs as well as the student's experience and interest. May be able to job shadow a RN or nursing assistant if interested.

Maternity Unit: Assist staff with organization of the facility and equipment. Training is provided.

OB Special Care: The OB Special Care Unit is designated for mothers with difficult pregnancies. Many of these expectant moms are long-term patients waiting for their babies to be born. This is an experimental project in cooperation with the OB Special Care Unit, Women's Services, Volunteer Services and the MSU Service Learning Center. Volunteers will work directly with patients one-on-one to create a book of memories for the family and new baby. "The Gift of Time" will be a creative outlet for the expectant mom and an opportunity to utilize this time to create a gift for the entire family. May also work with staff on other projects; may include some clerical support.

Inpatient Oncology: Inpatient unit for the care of patients with cancer.

Orthopedic/Neurological: A unit for all orthopedic patients with skeleton and muscular conditions as well as neuro (brain and nervous system) surgical patients.

Outpatient Surgery: Provide pre- and post-operative care to over 90 patients daily. MSU student volunteers help to transport, dress and assist the patient before or after the surgery.

Pediatrics: Serve as ambassador to patients and staff. Great opportunity for one-on-one interaction with patients and families.

Pediatric After Hours Clinic: After hours clinic for pediatric patients. Main responsibility is to work with patients and families.

Senior Health: Work with geriatric patients in primary care setting. Great opportunity for one-on-one contact with patients, families and staff.

Substance Abuse: Interact with patients through listening, conversation and assistance with AA study periods. Participate in class activities, group sessions, activity therapy and special programs. (Volunteers are restricted from individual counseling sessions.) Attend staff and inservice meetings as able.

Surgical Specialties: A unit for patients with medical and surgical problems. Assist hospital staff as requested. Assist dialysis patients, patients with general medical needs and general surgical patients.

Women’s Pavilion: A unit specializing in the medical/surgical needs of women 18 years and older with a focus on gynecological conditions.
