HR Policy: Standards of Dress and Behavior

8.1  Dress Code
As representatives of SHS, volunteers, like staff, are responsible for presenting a neat and acceptable appearance at all times. Volunteers working in the main hospital must wear a uniform. Hose or socks must be worn with the respective uniform. Name pins will be issued and must be worn at all times. Volunteer patches will be issued and must be worn on the right side of the uniform. Uniforms shall fit properly and be clean and pressed.

Volunteers are required to purchase their own uniforms.

Only minimal amounts of light cologne or aftershave may be worn.

8.2   Smoking
In accordance with SHS philosophy and legal obligation, smoking is prohibited in all SHS buildings. Smoking is permitted in designated outside areas only.

8.3  Liability
Volunteers are covered by the SHS insurance policy in the event of injury to themselves or to a patient while the volunteer is on duty. Any incident involving a volunteer which results in an injury shall be reported to the department supervisor/director, the Director of Volunteer Services and the Risk Management department. Incident report forms are available in all SHS departments.

A volunteer who has been injured shall go to Occupational Health Services or to the Emergency department. If no treatment is required or requested, the volunteer shall complete an Incident Report form noting that treatment was not required nor requested.

SHS shall not assume responsibility for loss of valuables brought by volunteers to the hospital complex. It is advisable to leave valuables at home and secure personal belongings while on duty.

8.4  Telephone use
SHS telephones are to be used for SHS business only. In-coming personal calls to volunteers are not encouraged except in the case of an emergency. Out-going personal calls are not encouraged on SHS telephones. Pay telephones are provided in convenient locations for this purpose.
