The volunteers are required in General Orientation to sign a form (attached) that confirms this information has been reviewed and the forms are kept in the individual volunteer's file in the Volunteer Services department. Updates are included in issues of the volunteer newsletter which is published and sent to all volunteers on a quarterly basis.
9.1 CODE RED (Fire)
- When a CODE RED is paged, indicating a fire, volunteers in the hospital will assist hospital staff in any means necessary. This could include closing doors, turning on lights and evacuating patients/families and visitors if necessary.
- Volunteers who discover a fire are to:
- R escue any affected persons in immediate area.
- A ctivate the alarm by pulling the nearest fire alarm box. Call the switchboard by dialing 123 at the Sparrow or St. Lawrence campuses, or 9-911 in the SPB and off-site offices. Identify the location of the fire, what is burning and the volunteer's name.
- C ontain/confine the fire and smoke by closing all doors and windows. Lights should be left on.
- E xtinguish the fire. Bring a fire extinguisher to the scene. Follow the PASS acronym in operating the extinguisher:
- P ull the fire extinguisher pin
- A im the fire extinguisher nozzle at the base of the fire
- S queeze the fire extiguisher handle while holding the extinguisher upright
- S weep the extinguisher nozzle from side to side covering the area of the fire
In orientation, volunteers are instructed to familiarize themselves with the location of all fire extinguishers and alarm boxes in their areas of service. They are also instructed to identify the location of stairwells for evacuation purposes.
9.2 CODE GREEN (Internal or External Disaster)
Volunteers in the hospital at the time a CODE GREEN is paged are instructed to assist hospital staff in their department's preparation procedures. Additional action by volunteers would be announced by the overhead paging system. Volunteers who are not in the hospital at the time of a community disaster are instructed to not come to the hospital unless summoned.
9.3 TORNADO WARNING
Volunteers in the hospital at the time a TORNADO WARNING is paged are instructed to assist the hospital staff in their department's preparation procedures. Volunteers are to proceed to the nearest internal hallway or to the cafeteria or Auditorium, as far away from windows as possible. Elevators will not be used during a TORNADO WARNING. Additional action by volunteers would be directed by the overhead paging system.
9.4 ATTENTION ATTENDING PHYSICIAN (CARDIAC/RESPIRATORY ARREST - ADULT)
ATTENTION ATTENDING PHYSICIAN - PEDIATRICS (C/R ARREST - CHILD)
ATTENTION ATTENDING PHYSICIAN - RNICU/3 NEUMANN (C/R ARREST - INFANT)
Volunteers in the location of the code(s) are expected to assist the hospital staff, if necessary, in preparing for the arrival of the Code Team. Volunteers not in the location of the code(s) are not required to take any action.
If a volunteer finds a non-responsive individual, or witnesses an individual collapse or lose consciousness, the volunteer is instructed to immediately contact a nurse if in a patient care area and/or dial 1-2-3, give the location and request that the appropriate code be paged.
9.5 CODE PINK
This code alerts staff and volunteers that an infant has been abducted from the nursery. Volunteers are to be especially aware of persons who appear suspicious (walking hurriedly or concealing an infant under a jacket, for example.) Volunteers shall immediately report such information to the Sparrow Security department at x64911.
9.5 CODE ORANGE (Bomb Threat)
This code alerts staff and volunteers to the occurrence of a bomb threat. Volunteers should calmly search their work areas for anything that looks out of place (e.g., a briefcase, an unidentified envelope or package, tape/wires by windows or doors, etc.) A search of public areas is the first priority (lounges, restrooms, stairwells, etc.) Report the finding of any suspicious item to Security at x64911 on the Sparrow or St. Lawrence campus. Do not touch, inspect, or move any suspicious item.
9.6 EVACUATION
In the event of an evacuation of the main hospital building, volunteers in the hospital will assist hospital staff by any means necessary, such as the evacuation of patients and visitors. Volunteers would then be expected to follow the exit procedures of the particular department in which they serve.
