About Our Program
The forerunner of today's Sparrow Health System was founded by a volunteer group known as the Women's
Hospital Association in 1896. It was from that beginning that Sparrow Hospital developed, and from which
the Sparrow Health System has now emerged. It is still that founding spirit of volunteerism and community
service which enhances Sparrow today.
In 1997, St. Lawrence Hospital and Sparrow Hospital volunteer programs
merged. Over 1,600 volunteers contribute more than 151,000 hours annually to all campuses.
