The Healing Garden & Labyrinth
As mid-Michigan's leading healthcare provider, Sparrow Health System has become home to the state of Michigan's first hospital-based labyrinth. The 36-foot-wide circular 11 circuit labyrinth is located in the "Healing Garden" between the Sparrow Professional Building and the parking deck. Dating back to ancient Greece and Egypt, a labyrinth is used as a meditative device. Walking its course is believed to help suspend conscious thinking and quiet the mind and heart. The labyrinth has concentric circles and a rosette-shaped center, modeled after the labyrinths at Grace Cathedral in San Francisco and The Cathedral of Notre Dame in Chartres, France. The path that leads to the center, and back again, is approximately one-third of a mile.
The labyrinth is surrounded by fragrant flower
beds, trees and shrubbery, a water fountain and benches for patients and
visitors to reflect and find peace.
