Reflexology
Reflexology is a therapeutic hand or foot massage with reported benefits of stress reduction through relaxation and increased energy levels. It utilizes the principle that there are reflexes
that directly correspond with every major organ, gland, and area of the body. Reflexology applies deep pressure to the various areas of the hands and/or feet.
Uses/Research Base:
Reflexology consists of steady, even pressure with the fingers,
thumbs, and palms to reflex points on the foot and/or hand. It
does not treat specific diseases, but it is believed to improve or
alleviate many health problems. It also contributes to the health and harmony of
the total person in a natural way. Reflexology works with energy flows
to revitalize the body and activate natural internal mechanisms to help the
body heal itself. It is used primarily to reduce stress and
promote deep relaxation. Other benefits include improved circulation of blood and
lymphatic fluid and a normalizing of the whole body system to a
state of homeostasis. Research is begin conducted on the benefits of the therapy. Research
in Denmark found that reflexology was known to provide patients with
relief of symptoms in areas such as pain, digestive disorders, and
hormonal conditions. Beginning research has been done in the United States
which shows that reflexology may alter baroreceptor reflex sensitivity
which delivers the above mentioned benefits.
