We are committed to respecting your desires and cultural practices in the childbirth process, and encourage you to complete a birth plan after talking with your doctor, nurse midwife or nurse during a prenatal visit.

The Triage Unit, between the OB Special Care Unit and Labor and Delivery Unit, was developed to assess each woman individually and decide if she is in actual labor.

When you come to Sparrow Hospital to have your baby, Obstetrics Services Labor and Delivery features comfortable private rooms for your labor, delivery and recovery. Your family or support persons are welcome to share in this special time with you. We support the choice of natural childbirth, but also offer a full range of pain relief options, including a 24-hour epidural service. After delivery, you will move to the Mother/Baby Center where the same nurse will care for both you and your baby. Breastfeeding classes are taught Monday - Saturday by certified lactation consultants, who also provide breast pump rental and other services through the Lactation Support Services office at 517.364.2652. As the regional high-risk referral center, Sparrow has skilled staff and state-of-the-art equipment to handle any problems experienced by mothers and babies, during labor and delivery or after birth.

The specially trained staff at the Regional Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (RNICU) uses the latest technology to give even the highest risk babies the care they need. The RNICU staff cares for babies experiencing difficulty such as those born prematurely, with birth defects or having trouble breathing.
