Pediatric Outpatient Surgery (POPS)

POPS provides care for patients age 17 and younger who are:

  • Having outpatient surgery
  • Having an outpatient services such as diagnostic procedures and chemotherapy
  • Being admitted following surgery

Pediatric outpatient surgeries are performed under general anesthesia. The average length of stay is 3-7 hours from the time of admission to discharge.

UM Health-Sparrow's Child Life specialists conduct a free pediatric surgery orientation for children age three and older and their parents, to familiarize them with the hospital and ease anxiety about the surgery. Tours are offered every Sunday starting at 2 p.m. Pre-registration is required–call 517-364-2978, select option 1.

A telephone interview with a nurse is required 2-3 days prior to surgery to obtain medical history and other pertinent information.
