Monday, January 28, 2013 - Sparrow joins effort to raise awareness during first Clinical Trials Awareness Day at Capitol

Sparrow Cancer Center Patient Ann Herzberg didn’t hesitate when she was asked if she would participate in a clinical trial after she was diagnosed with Stage IV colon cancer in June 2011.

Herzberg, 56, of Eaton Rapids said she knew right away that participating in a clinical trial would be beneficial for her and for others who share her diagnosis.

“Whether I succeed or not individually, anything and everything they learn might save someone else’s life, if not mine,” she said. Herzberg is currently participating in her second clinical trial at the Sparrow Cancer Center, and hasn’t had any advancement in her cancer in several months.

The Sparrow Cancer Center is joining Michigan Rep. Gail Haines’ effort to raise awareness and encourage participation in clinical trials in the state. As part of this effort, Clinical Trial Awareness Day will be held from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30, in the south and west wings of the Capitol.

The Sparrow Cancer Center has one of the largest clinical trial programs in the state. Sparrow Patients are currently taking part in more than 20 clinical trials dedicated to treating all types of cancer.

“Clinical trials allow us to make a difference for our Patients and further our mission to provide quality, compassionate care to every Patient, every time,” said Dr. Gordan Srkalovic, MD. “This research will help us expand our treatment arsenal and find the next best tool to treat cancer.”
