The Sparrow Cancer Center is hosting its 18th Annual National Cancer Survivors Day Celebration from 1-4 p.m. on Sunday, June 10, at Lansing's Hawk Island Park.
"Cancer Survivors Day is not only a chance to celebrate and thank loved ones for their support, but also a chance to inspire and give strength to patients currently in treatment," said Dr. James Herman, M.D., Director of the Sparrow Cancer Center. "It's a really incredible event."
Nicholas Rebh of Elsie, and a Sparrow Cancer Center Patient, agrees. This Sunday, June 3, is not only the official date of National Cancer Survivors Day, but Nicholas and his wife Junith will celebrate 17 years of marriage and nearly three years free of cancer. "It's even more special now." Mr. Rebh is looking forward to attending the picnic on the 10th.
The local event joins thousands of communities throughout the United States, Canada, and other participating countries in celebrating life as part of the Annual National Cancer Survivors Day, the world's largest cancer survivor event. A "survivor" is anyone living with a history of cancer, from the moment of diagnosis through the remainder of life.
The picnic lunch will be emceed by Dr. Vesna Kaluza, M.D., Sparrow Cancer Center Medical Oncologist/Hematologist, and rounded out with entertainment groups, the Hermanettes and the Patch Chords, along with Shrek-themed children's activities, including a Potter Park animal presentation and Impression 5 slime making. Terrence Carroll will be performing/presenting "A Slice of Celtic Culture".
