Cultural Series on Caring for the Hispanic/Latino Patient

Published: July 30, 2015

Sparrow Caregivers learned about the unique challenges and concerns involved in caring for Hispanic and Latino Patients during a panel discussion and education session presented by Sparrow’s Diversity and Inclusion Department in partnership with Patient Experience, Nursing, and Physician Education.

Panel discussion guests were: George Mansour, Ph.D.; Luis Gonzalez, M.D., FACOG; Connie Currier, DrPh, MPH, and Isabel Montemayor, Ph.D.

By the end of the presentation, attendees were able to: discuss cultural biases within and outside the Hispanic and Latino community, describe the unique cultural behaviors within Hispanic and Latino culture as they relate to health care, and identify opportunities for Caregivers to grow in the journey toward cultural competency.

The presentation is part of the 2015 Cultural Competency Discussion Series: The Intersections of Culture, Care, and Safety. The discussion series will provide understanding, skills, and the opportunity to learn about diverse groups, their orientation towards care and the impact culture has on safe Patient care.

Diversity and Inclusion education for Caregivers is part of Sparrow’s ongoing effort to empower and engage Caregivers by equipping them with the knowledge and tools they need to to put the needs of Patients first.
