Dedicated, resourceful financial counselor in Spotlight

Sparrow Caregiver Janice Verhougstraete can relate to the Patients she advocates for because she has been in their shoes.

The grandmother of four was recently diagnosed with Stage III Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma.

Verhougstraete fought to regain her health and strength and is back at work as a financial counselor in Sparrow’s Pediatric Rehabilitation department.

She was nominated for Sparrow’s Caregiver Spotlight, honoring those who go above and beyond in providing extraordinary care, making sure the needs of the Patient always come first.

Verhougstraete helps Patients and their families navigate insurance needs to make sure her young Patients are covered to receive the life-changing treatment they need.

“The last thing these families need is to get a bill in the mail,” she said. “It’s very rewarding to see the amazing things the Patients can accomplish.”

Verhougstraete received chemotherapy and radiation treatments and is now in remission.
