LANSING, MI – Sparrow is proud to announce that Michael Kent McLeod, M.D., MBA, FACS, FACE, has begun his two-year term as the new chief of medical staff for E.W. Sparrow Hospital (EWSH).
McLeod had been chosen by his colleagues to serve as chief of staff-elect for the past two years. He succeeds LaKeeya Tucker, D.O., for whom Sparrow is grateful for her outstanding leadership.
As chief of medical staff until the end of 2025, McLeod will help lead and be a voice for Sparrow physicians. He hopes to bring Sparrow’s medical staff closer together, in part by improving communications between clinical caregivers, including nurses and physicians, to better care for patients.
”My leadership philosophy is guided by the quote ‘… we must constantly re-evaluate what we do, lest habits and past wisdom blind us to new possibilities,’” McLeod said.

McLeod is a well-respected physician specializing in endocrine care and general surgery and serves as a professor of surgery at Michigan State University. He was the medical director of surgical quality and vice-chair of surgery at EWSH, and chair of the quality and patient safety committee at MSU Health Care. He has dedicated his non-surgical time to teaching surgical residents and medical students and participating in numerous task forces and committees at Sparrow to assure that patients at EWSH receive the highest quality of care and safety possible.
McLeod has received numerous awards for teaching and advocating for patient safety and quality. He went to medical school at Cornell, trained in general surgery at the University of Michigan, and did a research fellowship in endocrine surgery at Brown University and Rhode Island Hospital. He joined both the medical staff at EWSH and the staff of MSU’s department of surgery in 2009 when he came to Lansing to revive the general surgery residency program. Under his leadership, the residency program became fully accredited and received commendations from the Residency Review Committee of Surgery, a subcommittee of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).
