The Sparrow Ionia Hospital Foundation along with Steve Edmonson, D.O., of Saranac helped purchase automated external defibrillators, or AEDs, for the Ionia County Sheriff Department road patrols.

An automated external defibrillator can send an electric shock to the heart to try to restore a normal rhythm. AEDs are used to treat sudden cardiac arrest, or the sudden, unexpected loss of heart function, breathing and consciousness.

The Sparrow Ionia Hospital Foundation was created in 1979 to improve healthcare services for Ionia County.
