Kathy Boltz of Lansing named March Volunteer of the Month

Published: March 12, 2015

The Sparrow Women's Board of Managers and the Volunteer Services Department have nominated Kathy Boltz of Lansing as the March Volunteer of the Month.

Boltz was born and raised in Lansing and now lives in Grand Ledge. She attended Sexton High School and then went on to college at Michigan State University, but did not graduate. When her daughter went off to college, Boltz enrolled in night classes at Western Michigan University to complete her degree. Her daughter beat her by one year!

Boltz worked as a secretary in the executive offices of Farm Bureau Insurance for 20 years. After retirement, Boltz refocused her life. She had always wanted to be a Sparrow volunteer and thought this was the perfect time to apply.

Boltz has been a surgical lounge volunteer in the Mercy League at the St. Lawrence campus for eight years. She has served as the secretary for the Mercy League for several years, typing the group’s monthly schedules and updating them as needed. When the bylaws were recently revised, she gladly retyped them and included the new revisions. One of her favorite duties is sending cards to the group’s members for their birthdays, illnesses or losses. Boltz also trains new volunteers.

Her peers commend her for being very friendly and helpful to Patients and their families. She likes being able to calm people and have answers to their questions and concerns.

Boltz has two grandsons. She enjoys attending their concerts and sporting events. She also enjoys MSU football and basketball and the Detroit Tigers. Her family makes sure she gets to Comerica Park at least once a year, usually on her birthday.
