The Lansing Catholic High School girls volleyball team is going for the kill against breast cancer. The team solicited donations during the month of October and presented the Sparrow Cancer Center with a check for $4,675 to help fight the disease.
The money will go to WINS (Women's Information Network and Support), a group that provides breast cancer education, prevention, and support.
"We wanted to do something that was going to make an impact in the community," said Kathleen Maher, a senior at Lansing Catholic. "Knowing that we could help and knowing people with cancer was really the driving force behind doing this."
The team collected donations through an intramural volleyball tournament, a gift card raffle, and by hosting a bake sale every Wednesday during October.
"It's inspiring to see young women and girls do something that will positively impact so many people," said Sharolyn Gonzalez, founder of WINS and breast cancer survivor.
"We're very grateful for this donation and it will help us to fight the disease and better treat our Patients," said James Herman, M.D., Medical Director of the Sparrow Cancer Center. "Cancer can strike anyone so it's important for everyone to get regular screenings and be aware of their risk factors."
