LANSING, Mich. - A Lansing product and former star player for the Michigan State University baseball team has joined the Sparrow Thoracic and Cardiovascular Institute.
Carlos Fernandez, D.O., is now an interventional cardiologist for Mid-Michigan's leading heart team, serving the region where he was raised.
The son of Cuban immigrants, Dr. Fernandez attended Lansing Catholic Central High School before going on to MSU as a student-athlete. He played four seasons for the Spartan baseball team and was captain and most valuable player of the 1999 squad.
Being a Spartan athlete "gave me a certain amount of discipline and pride, and taught me to be part of something bigger than myself," he said.
Dr. Fernandez follows in the footsteps of his brother, Felix, a thoracic and transplant surgeon in Atlanta, Ga.
"This community has provided me with many opportunities," Dr. Fernandez said. "And it is important to me and my family to give back.
"I have strong ties to Lansing. And I'm thrilled to be able to practice medicine in Mid-Michigan."
Dr. Fernandez, wife Stacy and their three children live in DeWitt, and most of his family remains in the Lansing area.
