Leading heart surgeon comes to Sparrow

Mayo Clinic-trained physician joins Cardiovascular practice

LANSING, Mich. - Alonso Collar, M.D., a leading heart and vascular surgeon in the Lansing area for 25 years, has joined Sparrow Hospital.

Dr. Collar has joined the Sparrow Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery practice. He has also been designated Sparrow's Medical Director of Cardiovascular Surgery.

Dr. Collar is a Mayo Clinic-trained heart and vascular surgeon who combines state-of-the-science expertise with extensive knowledge and experience.

"Sparrow has been a tremendous asset to our region for many years. They've made an enormous commitment to the treatment of cardiovascular disease, the area of medical expertise to which I have dedicated my life," says Dr. Collar, a native of Cuba who came to the Lansing area when he was 8 years old.

"I feel together in partnership with Sparrow's Heart and Vascular Center, the Thoracic Cardiovascular Institute, and dedicated cardiologists at Sparrow we're going to do some great things relative to the treatment of cardiovascular disease."

Dr. Collar places particular importance on educating patients about prevention and treatment of heart disease, notably in the lifestyle choices we make.

"It's a passion," he says.

Dr. Collar specializes in cardiac, thoracic and vascular surgery. He is a graduate of Michigan State University's School of Human Medicine and an active member of the community.
