We’re excited to announce that Sparrow’s comprehensive newborn care services now include ongoing support for breastfeeding moms through the new Sparrow Breastfeeding Clinic.
Funded by a generous grant from Sparrow’s Women Working Wonders (W3), this unique service offers 30 minutes with a Physician (the only Physician consultation for breastfeeding available in the area) and 30 minutes with an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant.
W3 is a group of business women and civic leaders striving to be the Lansing area's premier advocate for women's health and wellness issues.
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends exclusive breastfeeding, especially for the first six months of life, to protect infants against a variety of conditions, including ear infections, bacterial meningitis, respiratory tract infections, diabetes, and childhood obesity. Breastfeeding also offers health benefits for mothers such as decreased postpartum bleeding, earlier return to pre-pregnancy weight, and a decreased risk of breast and ovarian cancers.
The Breastfeeding Clinic will be open on Tuesdays and Fridays from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. by appointment for babies born at Sparrow. To schedule, have your Physician make a referral through CareMatch for Kids at 1.855.717.KIDS (5437) or 517.364.5710.
Whether a mom is just home from the hospital or several months have passed, our team of specially trained Caregivers can help with common problems such as insufficient milk supply, improper latching, painful feedings, mastitis, feeding multiples, pre-term infants, and more. Our goal is to ensure that mom and baby have a positive breastfeeding experience and the support to continue breastfeeding for as long as they wish.
Sparrow is mid-Michigan’s only Baby-Friendly® Hospital. The Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) is a global program of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).
BFHI certification demonstrates excellence in providing evidence-based, Patient-centered maternity care that promotes best practices in infant feeding and mother/baby bonding. The goal is improved health outcomes for mothers and babies.
