The public is invited to bag up and bring in all their medications—prescriptions, over-the-counter, vitamins, and herbal supplements— for review by Sparrow Pharmacists during a special Brown Bag event.
The free medication management sessions will celebrate National Pharmacy Week and are being held Tuesday and Wednesday, Oct. 20-21, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the lobby of Sparrow Hospital on Michigan Avenue.
Sparrow Clinical Pharmacists and Doctor of Pharmacy students will be on hand to review medications, field questions, discuss drug interactions, and give advice on generic alternatives.
The goal is to educate Patients in the proper use and interactions of prescription and over-the-counter medications and supplements.
“A brown bag check-up is not only helpful to Patients, but is useful for Physicians and Pharmacists too,” said Sparrow Director of Pharmacy Timothy Ekola, Pharm. D. “This review will help health care practitioners know whether you understand how to take the medication or if you are aware of any special precautions that you may need to know about.”
Also on hand will be Physicians Health Plan (PHP) Clinical Pharmacist Joy Wahawisan, Pharm. D., BCPS. Wahawisan’ s Medication Therapy Management program has been saving lives and improving Patient health since its launch in July.
The Pharmacist-directed program helps Patients understand and manage their medication regimen and assists prescribers in avoiding potential medication-related problems. Medication Therapy Management is a free service for all Patients covered by PHP, a subsidiary of Sparrow. It is an important innovation that advances Sparrow’s mission to provide coordinated, comprehensive care that puts the needs of the Patient first.
