LANSING, Mich. - Physicians Health Plan of Mid-Michigan (PHPMM) recently received national attention as U.S. News & World Report and the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) ranked PHPMM 40th out of 239 health plans in the United States. PHPMM's Medicaid product was ranked 23rd nationally.

"Our goal at Physicians Health Plan of Mid-Michigan is to assure our members receive the highest quality health care available," said Scott Wilkerson, CEO of Physicians Health Plan of Mid-Michigan. "We are delighted that PHPMM has been rated one of the top health plans in the nation, and we are proud that our members are receiving outstanding care. It takes teamwork to earn this honor, and I thank all our associates for their dedication to providing quality health care."

U.S. News & World Report and NCQA, the major accrediting body for managed-care health plans, joined forces to rank hundreds of the nation's health maintenance organizations and point-of-service plans based on quality. The NCQA reviewed audited data submitted by plans in dozens of measures after assigning each to one of four major categories: access to care, overall member satisfaction, prevention and treatment. The factors included medical measurements, such as diabetes monitoring, childhood immunizations and heart and cancer screenings. Customer service also was considered.

The survey looked at ease of access to care when members need it as well as satisfaction with care given and with caregivers, such as personal physicians and nurses. Ratings were based on a five-star system with one star as the lowest and five stars as the highest possible rating.

PHPMM earned five-star ratings in member satisfaction, getting care, satisfaction with physicians, women's reproductive health, cancer screening, and asthma treatment categories.

The NCQA has also awarded PHPMM its highest accreditation status of excellent for its commercial HMO/POS combined product lines and its Medicaid product, FamilyCare.
