When Sparrow Nurse Michael Maher, R.N., was a young boy, he wanted to become a TV meteorologist. But that all changed in high school when Maher's grandfather was diagnosed with leukemia.
"I was amazed by the knowledge and compassion the Nurses showed my grandfather," Maher said. "That's when I decided I wanted to become a Nurse."
Maher now applies that same knowledge and compassion to his Patients in Sparrow's Intensive Care Unit. It's one of the reasons he's being honored in this month's RN Caregiver Spotlight - a program that recognizes Nurses for their achievements and contributions to Sparrow and its Patients.
"The work we do as a team in Sparrow's ICU is very rewarding," he added. "We see many Patients at their worst and then to see them heal and recover is very inspiring."
Maher has been a Nurse for eight years, the last two at Sparrow. In addition to the quality care he provides, he has also been helping his co-workers with the transition to the new iSparrow Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system launched in December. The new system stores each Patient's medical records electronically, allowing easier access for both Patients and Caregivers. Maher had previous experience with the software and volunteered to help with training.
"Michael has been such a huge asset to Sparrow," said Deb Moran, Manager of Sparrow's Intensive Care Unit. "His experience with EMR has been invaluable. He is kind and compassionate with his Patients and always does whatever necessary to improve the Patient experience."
Maher and his wife, Jessica, a biology professor at Michigan State University, live in Lansing with their 4-year-old daughter, Ashley.
