Sparrow Ionia Hospital has named Ruth Higginson, R.N., Intensive Care Unit, as its 2014 Nurse of the Year.

The annual honor was given in recognition of the recent National Nurses Week and the recipient is nominated and selected by their peers and supervisors.

Higginson is lauded by colleagues as honest, organized, hardworking, and a great asset to Sparrow Ionia Hospital. She functions as a preceptor for new nurses and her co-workers rely on her for her experience and nursing expertise.

Higginson graduated from Montcalm Community College and started working in the Medical/Surgical Unit at Sparrow Ionia Hospital in 1986.

While not caring for Patients, Higginson enjoys reading, gardening, traveling and spending time with her husband Ron, children and grandsons.

National Nurses Week, which was held May 6-12, offered the opportunity for us to show our appreciation of the Nursing professionals at Sparrow Ionia Hospital.
