The Sparrow Tower, the single largest commitment to improving health care in the region when it was built in 2008, has reached a key milestone as the new home for Sparrow Specialty Hospital, marking the completion of all 450,000-square-foot and full occupancy.
Sparrow Specialty Hospital (SSH), a long-term acute care hospital, relocated to the 8th Floor of the Sparrow Tower to improve the Patient experience and offer increased access to specialty services and ancillary support such as Neurology, Orthopedics, Cardiology, and more.
Interior build-out construction on floors 7 and 8 of the Sparrow Tower began in fall 2013. The 7th Floor opened in January 2015, adding 30 private Medical Surgical rooms for Patients who require an inpatient stay.
A $23.2-million Neurosciences Center opened on floors 9 and 10 in July 2013, including a dedicated EEG Monitoring room, and the Lansing Neurosurgery Learning Center to advance neurological education in our community.
At nearly 16,000 square feet, an expanded Surgical Center, adding 10 high-tech operating rooms and creating the largest, most advanced, surgical center in the region, opened in the lower level of the Tower in May 2014. The space also includes Sparrow’s first frozen specimen lab, located centrally within the Surgical Department, allowing for real-time diagnosis and intervention while the Patient is still in surgery.
As services have shifted to the Tower, it has allowed for renovations in other areas of the hospital, including the new Mary Free Bed at Sparrow Unit currently under construction. Phase I is expected to open in May of this year.
These projects, and more like them to come, are an example of how Sparrow is transforming care and pursuing best practices to improve the health of our region.
Choose Wisely. Choose Sparrow.
