LANSING, MI – Sparrow Hospital placed among the leaders in a six-week Gift of Life Hospital Challenge, registering 241 people to the Michigan Organ Donor Registry.
Sparrow took third place in the friendly competition, vying against larger health systems from throughout the state. The Challenge, which ended last week, brought in a combined total of 1,691 additions to the Donor Registry.
“Every name added to the registry means hope for the more than 3,300 Patients waiting in our state today for a life-saving organ transplant,” said Dorrie Dils, CEO of Gift of Life Michigan, the state’s federally designated organ recovery program. “This state’s hospitals are national leaders in making the registry a priority. We value their commitment, their partnerships and their drive to save and improve lives.”
If you’re not among the 60 percent of Michigan adults who are registered organ and tissue donors, you can still go to www.giftoflifemichigan.org/go/sparrow. If you think you’re a registered donor but aren’t sure, check your driver’s license or state ID for a little red heart symbol.
Sparrow, the regional trauma center for mid-Michigan, is among the statewide leaders in tissue and organ donations and has worked closely with Gift of Life to support donors and their families. That’s because the needs of our Patients always come first and our mission is to improve the health of the people in our communities by providing quality, compassionate care.
One organ donor can save the lives of up to eight people and tissue donors can improve life for as many as 75.
