Sparrow has received a $10,000 grant from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services to enhance critical birthing services and work toward reducing infant mortality.
Phase II of the Birthing Hospital Project Implementation Plan will include connecting Medicaid-eligible infants and expectant mothers to special services, such as the Maternal Infant Health Program and Children Special Health Care Services. It will also allow Sparrow to implement quality monitoring measures and improvements to its overall Birthing Hospital Project, aimed at addressing infant mortality.
"This grant makes possible Sparrow's ability to connect our at-need population with community resources for the seamless continuation of care from birth to the home with follow-up and needed resources," said Kathy Marble, Director of Sparrow Women and Children Services.
The award also encourages increased focus in other maternal care areas such as Infant Safe Sleep, postpartum support for new mothers, and increased efforts to connect at-risk mothers and their children with Caregivers in order to provide support at home.
Sparrow has achieved a national benchmark in quality care for mothers and babies as mid-Michigan's only Baby-Friendly Hospital. The Birthing Hospital project and Baby-Friendly designation aligns with our efforts to ensure that our youngest Patients receive the best and most compassionate care.
