Sparrow Carson DAISY winner compassionate during COVID

CARSON CITY, MI – Sparrow Carson Hospital Emergency Department nurse Holly Hnetynka, BSN, RN, has been honored with a DAISY award for outstanding nursing for the special care she provided at the height of the COVID-19 response.

Hnetynka was recognized for the extraordinary compassion she exhibited to a patient in isolation who was not able to have family at her bedside. Hnetynka recognized the patient’s fear and kept her company for an extended period of time dressed in full personal protective equipment, which included an N-95 mask, a full face shield, and full zip-up jumpsuit. Hnetynka felt passionately that the patient not be left in the room alone.

“This is what I was born to do, this is what I’ve trained my whole life for. Put me in coach, I’m ready,” Hnetynka was quoted as saying by Emergency Department Manager Sara Hagerman, RN.

During the DAISY award presentation, Hagerman said that COVID-19 tested many healthcare workers and even the strongest of caregivers were fearful or apprehensive about the unknowns involved. Hnetynka showed special skills that made her ideal to receive the DAISY award.

Hnetynka has worked in Sparrow Carson’s Emergency Department since June 2011. She has served on the department’s Unit Based Council, which focuses on best practices and quality. Hnetynka also continues to focus on personal growth and is currently working toward acceptance into the Physician Assistant Program at Central Michigan University.

Sparrow Carson Hospital congratulates Holly for representing the extraordinary qualities that help our hospital provide quality, compassionate care to everyone, every time.

The DAISY Foundation was established in 1999 by the family of J. Patrick Barnes who died of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenia (ITP) at age 33. DAISY is an acronym that stands for Diseases Attacking the Immune System. During Pat’s eight-week hospitalization, his family was awestruck by the care and compassion his nurses provided not only to Pat but to everyone in his family. The foundation was created in Pat’s memory to recognize extraordinary nurses for the enormous difference they make in the lives of their patients every day.
