Sparrow Carson Hospital Auxiliary awards scholarships

Three incoming college freshmen have received a $500 college scholarship for tuition, books, and school supplies from the Sparrow Carson Hospital Auxiliary to pursue careers in healthcare.

The scholarships were given to Aubree Harp of Stanton, Amulya Jain of St. Johns, and Lindsey Keilen of Pewamo. Harp will attend Montcalm Community College in the fall to study pre-Nursing; Jain plans to attend Michigan State University for a pre-med track in Physiology; and Keilen will attend Grand Valley State University to study Nursing, something she has aspired to since age 14 after watching dedicated Nurses help her grandmother during her battle with lung cancer.

Applicants were required to complete an application, submit an essay on what inspired them to choose a health-related field and provide three reference letters. Applications are reviewed by a committee looking for volunteerism, involvement in scholastics, extracurricular activities and strong grades.

"Because Sparrow Carson Hospital Auxiliary is a volunteer organization, we feel that it is an honor to award scholarships to those students entering the medical profession,” said Halina Traverse, Auxiliary Scholarship Committee member.
