Sparrow celebrates and honors physicians on National Doctors’ Day

LANSING, MI – From the beginning when a lone physician began providing care from a rented house to today’s 1,263 primary and specialty care physicians, Sparrow physicians have led the way in quality and patient care. Sparrow takes special pride in honoring those doctors on this National Doctors’ Day.

“Every year we pause and reflect on Doctors’ Day regarding how grateful we are for our doctors and the work that they do,” said Karen Kent VanGorder, M.D., Sparrow Health System’s Chief Medical and Quality Officer.

“This year especially, I am so proud of our Sparrow physicians and the work they have done in the pandemic for our community.  In other places, urgent cares closed, ours didn’t.  In many places, surgeons didn’t operate, ours found a way.  In other communities, no one could see their family doctors, ours stayed open as well as provided virtual visits.  In some places, there were Intensivists’ shortages, we had volunteers from other disciplines.

“Our Residents did extra rotations to care for the sickest patients and provided extra hospital units’ staffing when needed.   Our Sparrow physicians are brave and tireless in the care they provide to us and my gratefulness is more profound and heartfelt than ever.  Take a moment and be proud of yourselves, Sparrow physicians.”

As the region’s only community-owned, community-based health system, Sparrow physicians provide expert care throughout Mid-Michigan. Sparrow attracts primary and specialty care physicians who have trained in the latest innovations at leading medical centers.
