Sparrow CMIO heads leading healthcare IT group board

Sparrow’s Chief Medical Information Officer has begun a one-year term as board chair of the leading North American organization focused on improving healthcare through IT.

Vice President and CMIO Michael Zaroukian, MD, PhD, MACP, FHIMSS, now chairs the board of directors of HIMSS North America, a not-for-profit organization aimed at using IT to increase the quality, access and value of care.

“As the board chair, I’m excited to play a key role in helping shape HIMSS’s strategies to improve health outcomes through IT,” said Dr. Zaroukian. “This reflects Sparrow’s mission to continuously provide quality care to our Patients, and gives us better insights into how HIMSS’s strategies and endeavors can support Sparrow goals.”

Dr. Zaroukian was also elected to serve as board chair-elect of HIMSS, the global parent organization of HIMSS North America. He will begin his term in July 2017.

Dr. Zaroukian is a national leader and expert in the use of IT to transform Patient care. He has been named one of the 30 leading Chief Medical Information Officer experts in healthcare by Health Data Management.

A recipient of the 2010 HIMSS Physician IT Leadership Award, he has also served as a member of the American Medical Association (AMA) Health Information Technology Advisory Group and the HIMSS Enterprise Information Systems Committee. He is past chair of the HIMSS Ambulatory Information Systems

Committee and the American College of Physicians Medical Informatics Committee. He is also Professor of Medicine, College of Human Medicine, at Michigan State University.
