ST. JOHNS, MI – A Sparrow Clinton Hospital Nurse’s compassionate care of a special Patient helped earn her the hospital’s DAISY Award for exceptional Nursing skills.

Melissa Ball, RN, joined the Sparrow Clinton Hospital Nursing Team in 2005 after working 10 years at Sparrow downtown in the Respiratory Stepdown unit.

Ball gained praise from the family of a hospice Patient who spent four days in her care before he died. The man’s daughters commended her empathetic, reassuring, and compassionate disposition.

“Helping people has always been my passion,” Ball said. “At Sparrow Clinton, we have more personal time to spend at the beside with our Patients. And that makes all the difference in their care and the lives of their families during critical times when everyone needs additional support.”

Beth Daugherty, Sparrow Clinton Vice President of Patient Care Services and Chief Nursing Officer, joined DAISY Committee Nurses in presenting Ball with the award, a certificate of recognition, a DAISY pin, and a hand-carved sculpture entitled The Healer’s Touch. In addition, a DAISY Foundation banner signed by Ball will be posted in the hospital.

“DAISY Award nominees personify the remarkable Patient experience at Sparrow Clinton Hospital,” said Daugherty, RN, BSN, MPH, CRRN. “All our Nurses provide extraordinary, skilled care with great compassion every day. Melissa is a fine example of the quality of Nursing care that earned this hospital our Pathway to Excellence designation.”

Also recognized were DAISY Nurse nominees Beth Guillaume, RN; Adriann Sanders, RN, MSN; Melanie Kotowicz, RN, BSN; Tasha Karek, RN, BSN; Kelsey Thelen, RN, BSN; Cindi Nakfor, RN; Amber Piper, RN; and Sarah Veith, RN, BSN. Each received a DAISY pin and flowers.

This year, the Sparrow Clinton DAISY Committee also recognized exceptional achievement by a Nursing Team. Nominees included the SCH Surgical Services Department, SCH 2-South Cancer Center, and SCH Emergency Services Department.

The first DAISY Team Award was presented to Emergency Services Department Nurses for their hard work and dedication in achieving designation as the first Level 4 Trauma Hospital in Region One.

The DAISY Award is an international program that rewards and celebrates the extraordinary, compassionate and skillful care given by Nurses every day. Nurses are nominated for the award by their Patients and families.

Sparrow Clinton Hospital honors two Nurses each year as DAISY Award winners. The DAISY Team Award will be presented as recognition is merited.

To nominate an exceptional Sparrow Clinton Nurse or Nursing Team, complete and return a form from one of The DAISY Foundation displays at the hospital.
