Three Sparrow Volunteers are being honored by Sparrow Hospice Services for their outstanding service and radical, loving care during 2015.

Joan Galbavi, of Portland, Pat Menning, of Lansing, and Barb Schroeder, of Lansing, relentlessly go above and beyond to help transform care for our end-of-life Patients and their families.

Galbavi is the recipient of the 2015 Home Hospice Volunteer of the Year Award for helping ease the burden of caregiving and offering companionship to those who need it.

“She was specifically requested by a Patient this year,” said Karen Ketola, Volunteer Coordinator for Sparrow Hospice Services. “Visits lasted for six months and to the Patient’s delight, Galbavi helped her make the Easter dinner she wished for. We are fortunate to have someone as dedicated as she is.”

Schroeder is the recipient of the 2015 Hospice House Volunteer of the Year Award for making caring for Patients her top priority.

“She offers a calming presence at the bedside of those who feel lonely or anxious,” said Ketola. “Over the years, she’s moved into a leadership role and mentors new Volunteers. She is hands-on and always supportive of those she works with.”

Each year, Sparrow Hospice Services also presents the Betty Geller Award Celebrating the Spirit of Hospice Care. Menning, the 2015 recipient, is being honored for her compassionate heart that touches Patients, families and fellow Caregivers. Her nomination letter notes that she has generously given her time since 2000. Menning is a constant source of caring and kindness and has a knack for knowing exactly what needs to be done.
