Sparrow Ionia Hospital has become Michigan’s first critical access hospital, and among a select few hospitals overall in the state, to be awarded LEED certification as a leader in meeting environmental and green-friendly standards.

Sparrow Ionia is also the first building in Ionia County to achieve LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), based on energy use, lighting, water and material use, and incorporating sustainable strategies.

The new Sparrow Ionia Hospital opened in 2015 and its construction incorporated many environmentally friendly techniques. By using less energy and water, LEED-certified buildings save money for families, businesses and taxpayers; reduce greenhouse gas emissions; and contribute to a healthier environment, according to the U.S. Green Building Council, which awards LEED certification.

“We are extremely proud to have Sparrow Ionia Hospital be recognized and receive official LEED certification,” said Bill Roeser, the hospital’s President and CEO. “We worked collaboratively with our design and construction teams, achieving energy efficiency, durability and a healthier environment for our Patients, their families and our Caregivers.”

Sparrow Ionia is located on a 43-acre campus and includes more than 60,000 square feet of usable space. The project team – The Christman Company, Hobbs + Black Architects, and Sparrow – were tasked with designing an extremely healthy and environmentally responsible facility, consistent with Sparrow’s mission to improve the health of the people of our communities by providing quality, compassionate care.

These strategies included credits for site development that maximizes open space and manages storm water quality and reduce building energy usage.

Sparrow Ionia is a full-service hospital that provides 18 private inpatient rooms, a 12-room Emergency Department, Oncology and Infusion Clinic, a leading-edge digital Diagnostic Imaging Department, Cardiology and Respiratory Services, a Surgical Department with private pre-operative and recovery Patient rooms, and a state-certified laboratory.
