Sparrow named “High-Performing” by U.S. News & World Report

Published: July 17, 2012

Sparrow has been named among the Best Hospitals in Southeastern Michigan, and earned a "high-performing" designation in nine specialty areas: Cancer, Diabetes & Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Geriatrics, Gynecology, Nephrology, Neurology & Neurosurgery, Pulmonology and Urology, according to a U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals rankings for 2012-2013 released today.

The review of roughly 5,000 hospitals nationwide looked at Patient survival rate relative to other hospitals, nurse staffing, measures related to quality of care, work to reduce the occurrence of errors, and a hospital's reputation amongst its peers.

Sherry Taunt, Vice President of Quality & Performance Improvement at Sparrow noted, "Sparrow's vision of being a nationally recognized leader in quality and the Patient experience means we have a responsibility to take the lead in fundamentally transforming health care in Michigan. Recognition such as this in nine of our specialty areas not only means we are providing excellent care for our community but gives us the building blocks we need to reach our goal of national recognition."

The hospital rankings, said U.S. News Health Rankings Editor Avery Comarow, are like a GPS-type aid to help steer Patients to hospitals with strong skills in the procedures and medical conditions that present the biggest challenges. "All of these hospitals are the kinds of medical centers that should be on your list when you need the best care," said Comarow. "They are where other hospitals send the toughest cases."

The rankings were published by U.S. News in collaboration with RTI International, a research organization based in Research Triangle Park, N.C. Highlights of the 2012-13 rankings will appear in the U.S. News Best Hospitals 2013 guidebook, to go on sale in August.

This is the latest in a series of recognitions that Sparrow has received, including the first health system in Michigan and one of the first five in the nation to be selected as a member of the prestigious Mayo Clinic Care Network and being named a top-performing U.S. health system by Thomson Reuters based on our performance in such important measures as Patient safety, Patient experience and other quality benchmarks.
