Sparrow has purchased CAP-Lab, a Lansing-based laboratory providing services in surgical pathology, dermatopathology, molecular diagnostics and cytology.

While Patients will continue to get testing done at Sparrow Laboratory locations throughout the region, this partnership will improve turn-around times and benefit Patient care.

“We are so pleased to have the CAP-Lab team join Sparrow,” said Tom Ostrander, Sparrow Vice President of Professional Services. “Patients are used to high-quality laboratory services from both Sparrow and CAP-Lab, and by working together we can continue to improve the quality of care Patients in mid-Michigan receive.”

In addition, Sparrow has named James E. Richard, D.O., to serve as the new Director of Sparrow Laboratories. Dr. Richard most recently served as Laboratory Director of CAP-Lab and is also the Director of Laboratories at Eaton Rapids Medical Center. Richard is board-certified in anatomic and clinical pathology, along with a sub-specialty certification in Cytopathology. A nationally recognized speaker, he is also a past contributor to leading industry publications including Washington G2 reports and Laboratory Economics.

Edwin Marinas, M.D., who has served as Interim Medical Director of Sparrow Laboratories since the retirement of Ronald Horowitz, M.D., in 2013, will assume the role of Associate Medical Director. “Dr. Marinas has been an exceptional leader during this time of transition and we are thankful for his work to provide excellent care and service for our Patients,” said Ostrander.

Two additional pathologists, John Paul Jones, M.D., and Wilhelm Lawrence, M.D., and 19 employees at CAP-Lab will also become Sparrow Caregivers as part of this purchase.

CAP-Lab will continue to operate at its present location in Lansing for the immediate future.
